State Financial Conditions Drive the Highways

The Reason Foundation has evaluated state-owned highway systems for the last two decades. Last week, they released their 20th annual report on the topic. The study produces an overall ranking for the states based on eleven indicators, including congestion, bridge condition, fatality rates, and cost-effectiveness of highway spending.

The chart above relates the overall ranking for the 48 continental United States to Truth in Accounting’s “Taxpayer Burden.” States with higher “Taxpayer Burdens” have significantly lower-rated state highway systems.
